James
Whitaker has been practicing law since he graduated from the
University of Cincinnati School
of Law in 1972. After
completing his military obligations in the
United States
Army he returned to practice with the
Internal Revenue
Service in the area of Estate and Gift Taxation. In 1975 he started
his own private practice in
Mason, Ohio and has been
serving
Mason and the Ohio Valley area for the last 34 plus years in the general
practice of law. Besides Ohio, Mr. Whitaker also is certified to practice
law in the state of Wyoming.
In
the early 1980's, a significant part of the
practice was in real estate and Mr. Whitaker represented
People’s
Building Loan and Savings Co. on a retained basis as
needed. As the economy changed in the mid-80s, the
practice shifted to Family Law. This has included
grandparent visitation, dissolution, spousal support,
divorce, issues with minor children, complex custody
disputes, division of retirement accounts, and property
division in Family Law. Mr. Whitaker has
also represented both the
City of Mason for several
years as a part time prosecutor, and the
City of Lebanon
as an assistant City Solicitor-Prosecutor for over 25
years.
In recent years the
practice has expanded to
include a significant emphasis on estate planning and
admission of trusts. His working knowledge of
general litigation, consumer protection, employment
rights, family law, small business formation, probate
planning, estate and trust administration, juvenile
court, criminal defense has served his clients well.
He was invited by Federal Court in Cincinnati to
join the
Potter Stewart Inn of Court and was one of the
youngest Presidents of the Warren County Bar
Association, implementing various continuing legal
education seminars for the
Warren County Bar
Association.
Mr. Whitaker is
currently, by appointment, a member of the
Warren County
Bar Association Law Library Board and a second term
member of the Warren County Bar Association Ethics and
Grievance Committee. He has served as an
Elder in his church and his volunteer work includes a
long tenure as Board Member of Community Concepts.
He is also a
past member of the Board for Legal Aid.
